Why does my internet connect then disconnects?

same ques as above but sometimes it says something about "time has run out"...it connects then disconnects...the lights on my dsl modem turn from a stable green to flickering red and green...to a stable green again...an wen this happen my fax doesnt work and vice versa...so plz help!!!
